Snow, Rain, Freeze-thaw: broken roads

15 January, 2010 - 15:09

So the rain finally arrived yesterday morning, bucketing it down in central London. The rain has melted most of the snow which is a good thing, it was getting annoying.

First the snow is bad - English motorists are not taught how to cope with snow and ice when they learn how to drive, so when it arrives the effect is scary on the roads. Secondly, councils are not prepared for it - again this is to do with government policy (not necessarily bad policy either).

However, the water, the low temperatures and the freeze thaw cycle has made the roads a nightmare.
